Saturday at Meritíssimo
Saturday is Brazilian churrasco day here, from noon to 3:30pm: picanha, bacon-wrapped chicken medallions and linguiça on the skewer, roasting slowly over the potatoes. Next to it, the hot buffet: rice, feijoada, lasagna and the collard greens pan. It is the busiest day of the week, and it pays to come early.
Buffet by the pound, every day from noon. Saturday is churrasco day.
After dark
Calabresa is smoked Brazilian sausage — not pepperoni. The menu spells it out so nobody orders the wrong thing. Thin crust, real mozzarella, oregano on top.

Since October 11, 1994
Argemiro was a truck driver, away from home weeks at a time. In 1994 he came down off the road to be near his children and, with Salomé, opened a kitchen inside their own house in Nova Era, Minas Gerais. A plate of food cost two reais and fifty cents.
Eleven addresses later, Meritíssimo has five houses open — four in Belo Horizonte and this one, in Fitchburg. The same family, the same recipe.
